“Collaboration has become an integral aspect of
software engineering. The widespread availability and adoption
of social channels has led to a culture where today’s developers
participate and collaborate more frequently with one another.
Awareness is widely accepted as an important feature of collaboration,
but exactly what this encompasses and how processes and
tools should be evaluated in terms of their awareness support
remains an open challenge. In this paper, we borrow a theory of
regulation from the Learning Science domain and show how this
theory can be used to provide more detailed insights into how
collaboration tools and processes can be compared and analyzed“

Software developers rely on media to communicate, learn, collaborate, and coordinate with others. Recently, social media has dramatically changed the landscape of software engineering, challenging some old assumptions about how developers learn and work with one another. We see the rise of the social programmer who actively participates in online communities and openly contributes to the creation of a large body of crowdsourced socio-technical content.

Accelerating you academic career and publishing in top journals
Talk given by professor Ian Hodgkinson at UTFPR Curitiba today (August 22nd, 2018).
Main takeaways
You must have a Research Pipeline. The aim is to always have something under review. You will reap rewards from your current effort in 2 a 6 years. Don't expect immediate gratification. Submit to a mixture of mid-range and high-end journals.
Visualize you ideas to keep focus. Have something like a Kanban board (at your office or at home) displaying your research ideas.
Profile Building. Besides going to conferences and workshops, have a profile on Academia, Research Gate and Google Scholar.
Do some research related activity everyday (except weekends) for at least 20 minutes.
Keep your CV up-to-date.
Read the Introduction from papers published in the best journals of your area. Imitate how they do that.
My handwritten notes are here. The image below is the first page.

- "Tools are important to software engineering research".
The Birth of Refactoring: A Retrospective on the Nature of High-Impact Software Engineering Research
Griswold, William G. ; University of California, San Diego ; Opdyke, William F.
IEEE Software
Software refactoring was independently invented in the late '80s by two students in two research groups: Ralph Johnson's group at the University of Illinois and David Notkin's group at the University of Washington. This article provides a retrospective of the birth of refactoring, reflecting on how the ideas came about and were developed in those two students' doctoral dissertations. The analysis provides useful insights for both researchers and practitioners seeking high impact in their work. This article is part of a special issue on Refactoring.

- IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering http://www.computer.org/portal/web/tse 2.292
- Empirical Software Engineering http://www.springer.com/computer/swe/journal/10664 1.640
- ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology http://tosem.acm.org 1.472
- Information and Software Technology http://www.journals.elsevier.com/information-and-software-technology/1.328
- Journal of Systems and Software http://www.journals.elsevier.com/journal-of-systems-and-software/ 1.245
- IEEE Software http://www.computer.org/portal/web/computingnow/software 1.230

TDD: Adequate Training
From "The Effects of Test-Driven Development on External Quality and Productivity: A Meta-Analysis", by Y. Rafique and V.B. Misic (Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada):
"We note a few key issues that the authors of future empirical studies should be aware of when designing their experiments. Adequate training should be given to the subjects so that they can sufficiently grasp the TDD technique prior to the actual experiment. Detailed information about training should be provided as well, including specific areas as well as the duration of the training."
Does this mean that TDD is too difficult to learn?

The saddest day of them all was the date of the Boston Marathon bombings, with a happiness score of 5.88 on a scale of 1 to 9. But even though it had less-sad score, Dec. 14, 2012, the date of the mass shooting at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school, may have actually been sadder, Danforth said.
That’s because the Newtown shooting happened on a Friday, a generally happy day when people otherwise would be tweeting positive vibes, he said. The Boston bombings happened on a Monday, when unrelated grouchy tweets about returning to work would have driven the average happiness down.
